August 1914, the Germans invade Belgium and France with 1 million men. The British army 80,000 strong, is forced to retreat towards Le Cateau in France. The Mormal Forest, 10 miles long and 4 miles wide is acting like a wedge and forces the retreating British army into two halves before Le Cateau. Lieutenant Harry Packard is tasked to secure a French village with his platoon by his hated commander Captain Rupert Turner. After a brief skirmish, Packard captures Captain von Roth, a ruthless Prussian officer, but his platoon is left behind in panic by Captain Turner. Nurse Laura Scot, is also left behind and with his prisoner Packard tries to make his way back to Le Cateau. He meets Major Russell, a wily intelligence officer who tells him that a German battlegroup is advancing through the Mormal Forest to keep the British army divided. If they succeed, Britain will lose the war. He orders Packard to warn General Haig on the far side to ignore this threat and continue the retreat south towards Le Cateau to ensure victory. But von Roth escapes to warn the German battlegroup. Amidst the brutal battle of Le Cateau, Packard faces revenge from von Roth and Captain Turner that ends in tragic consequences.
