Lay Sermons and Addresses is a collection of speeches delivered by Edward Caird in the Hall of Balliol College, Oxford. Caird was a Scottish philosopher who served as the Master of Balliol College from 1893 to 1907. The book contains nine sermons and addresses that explore various philosophical and religious themes, such as the nature of God, the relationship between science and religion, and the importance of ethics. Caird’s speeches are characterized by their clarity of thought and elegant prose, making them accessible to a wide range of readers. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the intersection of philosophy and religion, and the role of ethics in modern society.Caird Was One Of The First Generation Of British Idealists, Whose Philosophical Work Was Largely In Reaction To The Then-Dominant Empiricist And Associations Views Of Alexander Bain (1818-1903) And J.S. Mill. He Had, However, An Ability Of Literary Expression Which Green Did Not Possess; He Was Also More Inclined To Discuss Questions By The Method Of Tracing The Historical Development Of The Ideas Involved. But While Green Died At The Early Age Of 47, Caird Enjoyed A Relatively Long And Productive Life. It Is, In Part, For This Reason That He Exercised Such A Strong Influence, Particularly On The Relation Of Philosophy And Religion On Later Idealists Such As John Watson (1847-1939) And Bernard Bosanquet (1848-1923). Though Often Considered To Be’Hegelian, Caird Was Arguably More Profoundly Influenced By Kant, Though He Was Far From An Uncritical Reader. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
