Laura, Constancia y Una venganza —las tres novelas reunidas aquí, relatos de amor y de muerte— han sido rescatadas de los periódicos ajados del siglo XIX y ésta es la primera vez que se publican como libro, a tiempo para conmemorar los cien años del fallecimiento de la autora, Soledad Acosta de Samper (1833-1913), que fue la primera escritora colombiana que asumió su oficio de manera profesional. Soledad Acosta de Samper publicó decenas de novelas, además de obras de historia y ensayos, y fundó y dirigió varios periódicos. Quiso inscribir su voz dentro de ese diálogo tan poblado que fue la literatura del siglo XIX colombiano e hispanoamericano. En el escenario romántico de la época propuso otras formas de literatura, en especial otros tipos de personaje femenino que permitieran a las mujeres de su época pensarse de manera diferente y no sólo como la heroína romántica caracterizada en María, de Jorge Isaacs: las mujeres de Acosta son fuertes, capaces de elegir sus lecturas y de pensar en nuevos destinos; capaces, ellas mismas, de escribir de otros modos. 10
