Omówię kilka mniej znanych, ale równie znakomitych filmów. Przeanalizuję również kilka mniej znaczących filmów, a nawet kilka dzieł przeciętnych, które jednak pomagają zrozumieć jedną z głównych cech charakterystycznych lat 50., jaką jest paranoja. To właśnie w tej dekadzie po raz pierwszy science fiction zyskało znaczenie w hollywoodzkiej produkcji. Renomowani filmowcy pozostawali na marginesie tego gatunku, aktorzy byli mało znani, a produkcje były tanie i zazwyczaj ignorowane przez krytyków, chociaż wiele z tych filmów przeszło zasłużony proces późnego docenienia. Kasy kinowe okazały się jednak bardzo otwarte na ten gatunek w momencie, gdy tradycyjne potwory zniknęły ze sceny. Niebezpieczeństwo pochodziło teraz z kosmosu lub było uosabiane przez mutacje radioaktywne. Reprezentowały one w taki czy inny sposób niebezpieczeństwo, które wszyscy postrzegali jako obecne, czy to jako zagrożenie komunistyczne, czy też jako zagrożenie nuklearne. W czasach paranoi filmy te egzorcyzmowały zło.
