Kieferorthopäden haben seit langem mit Weichgewebeproblemen im Zusammenhang mit kieferorthopädischen Behandlungen zu kämpfen. Da sich Kieferorthopäden zunehmend auf Ästhetik, Behandlungsqualität und erhöhte Produktivität konzentrieren, sind neue Hilfsmittel und Technologien verfügbar, mit denen sie in kürzester Zeit hervorragende Ergebnisse erzielen können. Dazu gehören Gingivektomien zur Verbesserung der Ästhetik, zur idealen Positionierung der Brackets und zur Erleichterung der Hygiene im Bereich der kieferorthopädischen Apparaturen, die Entfernung von Gewebe zur Freilegung nicht durchgebrochener Zähne und zur Befreiung eingebetteter Apparaturen, Frenektomien sowie die Biostimulation aphthöser und herpetischer Läsionen. Es muss jedoch ein evidenzbasierter Ansatz für den Einsatz des Lasers in der kieferorthopädischen Behandlung entwickelt werden.
