Esta primera obra literaria de Ahmed Toufiq, reinventa el género de los cuentos de hagiografía y mística con la forma de una novela árabe contemporánea. Al seguir las vicisitudes de Shama, su desenvolvimiento en la vida y el destino dentro del destino de la ciudad marroquí de Salé, su pueblo y los gobernantes, su fortuna y la ruina, sus pérdidas, nos encontramos con la inspiración, los tonos, y el estilo de narración de cuentos tradicionales, una tradición poética, religiosa e histórica. Ahmed Toufiq escribe para sus conciudadanos, sus “vecinos”. Y sin embargo, su manera de contar la historia, y su exploración de las vueltas de la historia y los meandros del alma humana, hacen de este trabajo algo accesible a un público internacional. La novela fue llevada al cine con gran éxito en una adaptación del productor y director Mohammed Abdel-Rahman Tazi y ha sido traducida al inglés.
