En 1845, un marino gallego zarpa hacia la isla de Fernando Poo, en busca de la tumba de su abuelo, muerto en ella en 1778. En compañía de la mujer de quien se enamora, aprende a vivir allí como un nativo más y acaba por encontrar lo que busca. Recoge testimonios de los viejos del lugar, reconstruye la vida de su antepasado en la isla y queda atónito y horrorizado ante lo que descubre sobre él. En 1981 el Cónsul español en Guinea Ecuatorial conoce casualmente a una joven mulata, que resulta ser la única superviviente de la estirpe del marino. El diplomático la educa y encuentra para ella un trabajo en España. El destino quiere que la chica acabe asentándose, sin saberlo, en el mismo lugar de origen de su lejano antepasado, que zarpó hacia Fernando Poo en 1778. La novela es pródiga en singladuras oceánicas, hechos de armas y dramas pasionales, y recuerda al lector la existencia de un país olvidado y perdido en el más recóndito rincón de África.
