La escritura poética y teórica del poeta norteamericano Gary Snyder, revisitada en su fecunda relación con la obra de Dōgen, el maestro zen del siglo XIII, permite explorar nuevos modos de habitar el mundo de acuerdo con un principio panhumanista que concede la dignidad de persona a todas las formas de vida que pueblan la tierra, así como desarrollar sus consecuencias filosóficas y políticas. En las palabras de su autor, este libro 'comienza con una discusión de lo que Dōgen llama la Gran Tierra y lo que Snyder llama lo Salvaje, que comprende la acción de las aguas y las montañas, de vacío y forma. La discusión incluye una consideración sobre lo que podría significar aproximarse a la Gran Tierra a través de la pintura, la palabra poética y los sūtras. De la Gran Tierra, de la que no quedan seres ni lugares, transito en la segunda parte a una consideración del lugar donde este libro fue escrito, esto es: la costa oeste de la Isla de la Tortuga. Primero abordo el problema del lugar y luego paso a una discusión sobre los retos y otra forma de pensar el lugar como una de las muchas moradas (o mundos) que cohabitan en la Gran Tierra. El camino final lleva a su término la discusión de la implicación mutua de la Gran Tierra y la Isla de la Tortuga a través de una discusión de la democracia terrestre, un sentido de comunión basado en el lugar en el que todos los seres están interconectados y todos los seres importan'.
