La vida de la negra donada Úrsula de Jesús (1604-1666) ha sido hasta el momento uno de los secretos mejor guardados de la historia colonial del Perú. La publicación de una versión modernizada de su vida espiritual, que escribiera Úrsula a pedido de su confesor franciscano, nos permite escuchar la voz de una mujer que pasó de esclava a donada mística. El diario de Úrsula comparte las complejidades de la vida monástica con sus ideas sobre el purgatorio, pero también demuestra la espiritualidad barroca católica desde la perspectiva de una mística negra que sufría el racismo y las desigualdades de la época. La introducción, escrita por Nancy E. van Deusen, ubica el texto de Úrsula dentro del milieu de espiritualidad femenina de la época medieval y moderna, y explora el poder de la palabra escrita. El texto impreso también contiene una versión modernizada del diario espiritual escrito por Úrsula de Jesús y el CD que lo acompaña incluye una transcripción original del diario de Úrsula, las imágenes digitalizadas del diario y una transcripción modernizada de una Vida de Úrsula, escrita por un franciscano anónimo.
