Langt Ude is a Danish novel written by Hans Sophus Kaarsberg and published in 1897. The title translates to ''Far Away'' in English. The story follows the life of a young man named Carl, who is sent to a remote island in Greenland to work as a teacher. Carl is initially excited about the opportunity to explore a new culture and landscape, but he soon realizes that life on the island is harsh and isolated. He struggles to connect with the local Inuit people and to adapt to the extreme weather conditions. As the story progresses, Carl becomes increasingly disillusioned with his life on the island and begins to question his purpose there. He also develops a romantic relationship with a young Inuit woman named Naja, which complicates his feelings about his role as a teacher and outsider in the community. Langt Ude is a poignant exploration of themes such as cultural identity, isolation, and the search for meaning in life. Kaarsberg’s vivid descriptions of the Greenlandic landscape and the daily struggles of the island’s inhabitants provide a rich backdrop for Carl’s personal journey. The novel is considered a classic of Danish literature and has been translated into several languages. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
