Comme dans le médecin malgré lui, Lucinde feint d’être malade parce que son père ne veut pas qu’elle épouse l’homme qu’elle aime. Comme dans le médecin malgré lui, les médecins ne se rendent pas compte que la malade simule, parce qu’ils sont trop occupés à se quereller, quand ils ne comparent pas leur monture et leur clientèle. Molière, pour créer ses personnages, se serait inspiré des médecins de la famille royale.
