Fingendosi un testimone oculare e attingendo sicuramente a fonti attendibili, Leti rispetta i più importanti dati storici, ma non esita a inventare caratteri, situazioni, eventi, colloqui, corrispondenze, fino a trasformare la sua narrazione in un’'opera mista di storia e d’invenzione' ovvero in un autentico 'romanzo storico'.
