Lady Jane Grey: Inez Or The Bride Of Portugal is a historical fiction novel written by Ross Neil and published in 1871. The book centers around the tragic life of Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for only nine days in 1553. The story is told from the perspective of Inez, a fictional Portuguese lady-in-waiting who becomes Lady Jane’s closest friend and confidante during her imprisonment in the Tower of London. The novel begins with Lady Jane’s childhood and her education under the tutelage of the famous humanist scholar, Roger Ascham. It then follows her brief reign as Queen of England, which was marked by political turmoil and religious conflict. Lady Jane was eventually deposed by Mary I, who had her imprisoned in the Tower of London. Inez accompanies Lady Jane to the Tower and becomes her loyal friend and supporter during her imprisonment. As the novel progresses, Lady Jane’s fate becomes increasingly grim. She is sentenced to death for treason and is eventually executed on the orders of Queen Mary. Inez is devastated by her friend’s death but is comforted by the knowledge that Lady Jane died with dignity and courage.Overall, Lady Jane Grey: Inez Or The Bride Of Portugal is a poignant and well-researched novel that brings to life the tragic story of Lady Jane Grey. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Tudor history or historical fiction. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
