L’utilisation saine de l’internet est définie comme l’utilisation de l’internet pour atteindre un objectif désiré dans un laps de temps approprié sans inconfort intellectuel ou comportemental. Partout dans le monde, les gens ont trouvé en l’internet un moyen rapide et facile de recueillir des informations et d’interagir. Cependant, certaines personnes perdent le contrôle de leur comportement lié à l’internet, ce qui entraîne des difficultés dans leur vie quotidienne et familiale. Ce comportement incontrôlé a été décrit comme une 'dépendance à l’internet' ou une 'utilisation problématique de l’internet', et il a été suggéré que ce problème constituait une dépendance comportementale. À l’instar d’autres dépendances non chimiques telles que les jeux d’argent, le sexe et les achats, les principales caractéristiques de la dépendance à l’internet sont la préoccupation, la responsabilité émotionnelle, la tolérance, le retrait, les conflits interpersonnels et l’engagement dans des comportements répétitifs. Parmi les troubles comorbides, les troubles dépressifs, les troubles anxieux et les dépendances aux substances psychoactives sont les plus fréquemment associés à l’addiction à l’internet. La prévalence de l’addiction à Internet est élevée chez les jeunes, en raison de leur personnalité instable, et varie de 1,5 % à 24,2 %.
