La alimentación adecuada al inicio de la vida resulta fundamental para la salud y el buen crecimiento y desarrollo de los recién nacidos. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), utilizando como base principios científicos demostrados, recomienda la lactancia materna (LM) exclusiva hasta los 6 meses de vida y la alimentación complementaria adecuada sin interrupción de la LM hasta los 2 años de edad o más como alimentación óptima en la primera etapa vital. Dada la baja prevalencia mundial de la LM, la OMS en colaboración con El Fondo Internacional de Emergencia para la Infancia de las Naciones Unidas (UNICEF) lanzan en 1991 la Iniciativa para la Humanización de la Asistencia al Nacimiento y la Lactancia (IHAN) que proporciona grandes éxitos a nivel mundial y demuestra eficacia en la promoción de la LM. Con más de 20 años de recorrido histórico la Iniciativa IHAN cuenta con miles de centros sanitarios involucrados a nivel mundial, consiguiendo alcanzar así la población global, para la mejora de la atención sanitaria al neonato.
