Laberinto de fortuna, también conocido como Las trescientas, es la obra maestra de Juan de Mena. Es un poema alegórico en honor a Juan II de Castilla. Influido por Lucano, Virgilio y Dante, está escrito en verso dodecasílabo y casi trescientas coplas de arte mayor. Su estilo poético está caracterizado por el uso de un lenguaje latinizante y cultista, muy influido por la retórica latina. El poema relata el peso de la Providencia en la vida humana y en el destino de Castilla. Dejando de lado la carga simbólica, la trascendencia de Laberinto de fortuna radica en la descripción apasionada de sucesos históricos que apelan al patriotismo ibérico. Por tanto, es muy palpable la intención del poeta español de generar un sentimiento de unidad nacional alrededor del rey Juan II. Juan de Mena, con su obra cumbre El Laberinto de Fortuna (1444), es uno de los más grandes poetas en castellano adelantándose al Renacimiento literario. Gozó en vida de gran fama y alta consideración. Su obra esboza a la perfección el modelo de intelectual puro, dedicado en exclusiva a los goces culturales de las letras.
