Publicado en 1906, este inesperado opúsculo de Edmond Michotte relataba la visita que, en su presencia y unos cincuenta años antes, hizo el joven compositor Richard Wagner (1813-1883) al ilustre Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868), que había regresado a París para vivir apaciblemente un dorado retiro muy merecido. Ambos hombres van a lanzarse a una apasionante disputa (argumentando cada uno de ellos, paso a paso, sobre la reforma de la ópera y las concepciones wagnerianas de la ’música del porvenir), que confiere un enorme interés a este pequeño texto: pues, con la agudeza de ingenio que le caracteriza, Rossini comprende muy pronto que tiene ante sí a un teórico inspirado y a un interlocutor de primera clase que sabe perfectamente lo que quiere y adónde va.
