En esta obra, Roberto E. García nos sumerge en una faceta poco conocida del budismo antiguo: la domesticación de reyes y espíritus, narrada mediante relatos de violencia, poder y sometimiento. Alejándose de la imagen pacífica y contemplativa que el budismo tiene en el discurso popular, este libro revela cómo los héroes budistas —encabezados por el Buda Sãkyamuni— eran considerados capaces de enfrentar y subyugar a figuras poderosas que amenazaban el orden social y la expansión del dharma budista, es decir, de sus enseñanzas y su comunidad.A través de un análisis detallado de fuentes literarias y visuales de las escuelas budistas tempranas, el autor desentraña el concepto de damana (domesticación), mostrando que estos relatos no representaban conversiones pacíficas, sino actos de dominación simbólica que afirmaban la superioridad moral y ritual del budismo. Estas narrativas, cargadas de conflicto y fuerza, servían para legitimar el papel del budismo como autoridad frente al poder político de los gobernantes y los cultos locales de espíritus poderosos conocidos como yak?as y nãgas.Esta obra es relevante para comprender la compleja relación entre religión y soberanía en el budismo temprano, y descubrir cómo las historias de domesticación moldearon la identidad y los discursos de autoridad de una de las tradiciones religiosas más influyentes de Asia.
