La última marea: historia, arqueología y antropología en Vueltabajo, de María del Carmen Barcia Zequeria, Jorge F. Garcell Domínguez y Miriam Herrera Jerez, es resultado de una ardua investigación interdisciplinaria sobre la trata negrera en Cuba, especialmente en su etapa ilícita. En el libro se analizan cuatro alijos ocurridos en el siglo XIX, específicamente en la región occidental de la isla: dos han sido mencionados someramente en otros estudios especializados y dos se presentan por vez primera al público. Reconstruir estos acontecimientos posibilita profundizar en el funcionamiento de la sociedad colonial cubana y en las características del comercio trasatlántico de esclavos. La última marea… establece y describe por primera vez a nivel mundial un sitio de memoria histórica de la trata ilegal. Cuenta, además, con una amplia reproducción de documentos de archivos que permiten confrontar la investigación con los textos que la sustentaron, y con una rica colección de mapas e imágenes que apoyan las conclusiones de los autores. Este libro, pionero en su campo, marca una pauta en la investigación histórica y propone un nuevo acercamiento al fenómeno de la esclavitud. 10
