Che cos’è la coscienza? Come nasce? Siamo consapevoli di tutto ciò che sperimentiamo? Come facciamo a sapere che siamo i proprietari di ciò che sperimentiamo ogni giorno, sia attraverso ciò che mangiamo, sia attraverso ciò che pensiamo, sia attraverso ciò che percepiamo del mondo attraverso i nostri sensi, sia attraverso il modo in cui interagiamo con gli altri, eccetera? In che modo il cervello, l’organo più efficiente della natura, ci aiuta a sapere chi siamo come individui in un mondo in costante cambiamento? Quando ci concentriamo sui contenuti delle nostre esperienze coscienti, che comunemente chiamiamo 'io', non ci preoccupiamo e non ci rendiamo conto dell’attività elettrica o neurofisiologica presente nella base fisica della nostra coscienza: il cervello e il corpo. Ciò che ci colpisce subito è che gli aspetti fisici che la compongono non corrispondono alle qualità più intrinseche della nostra realtà interiore: la capacità di essere liberi e di trasformare il nostro modo di stare al mondo. Quest’opera fornisce una visione neurofilosofica dell’intero processo che integra la mente conscia e non conscia, il cervello, il corpo e l’ambiente come caratteristiche che costituiscono l’uomo nella sua realtà unica.
