La rompiente, publicada por primera vez en 1987, fue recibida por la crítica especializada como una narración que recoge las preocupaciones del período y coloca a la mujer en el centro del discurso para analizar su relación con la historia. La novela de Reina Roffé registra la experiencia de esos años, pero desde una estética que desarticula los núcleos básicos del relato tradicional y hace menos posible la fijación de un sentido. Se cruzan tiempos y espacios en procura de recuperar la memoria y desafiar las convenciones lingüísticas para alimentar una escritura que sirve como instrumento de análisis y crítica, a la vez que de integración a un mundo personal. Habla, de otra manera, sobre el autoritarismo, la violencia del poder y el exilio. Trabaja las implicaciones de una voz generalmente amputada del acontecer histórico, dramatizando el obstáculo y amparándose en ’lo no dicho’ como reflejo de una época represiva. La autora busca respuesta al interrogante qué es ser mujer y escritora en la Argentina y apela a la cuestión formal: cómo contar, desde qué lugar otro tomar la palabra, escribir contra el vacío del silencio.
