Cet ouvrage analyse les causes de la Révolution française. Il examine de manière critique le déroulement des événements de la révolution : de l’Assemblée nationale au Directoire, le règne de la Terreur et la réaction thermidorienne. Il examine également l’ère de Napoléon et son Grand Empire. La dernière partie de l’ouvrage met en lumière les impacts de la Révolution française et de l’ère napoléonienne et conclut que cette révolution est restée un modèle pour d’autres révolutions et a conduit à l’évolution du système international.
