Peu de chercheurs se sont attachés à comprendre le rapprochement sino-américain de la fin des années 1960 et du début des années 1970 dans une perspective tripartite, dans ses aspects historiques, politiques et théoriques. La recherche de George B. de Andrade entreprend une étude approfondie des retrouvailles qui ont choqué le monde, en pleine guerre froide, entre les deux géants qui représentaient l’opposition politique, idéologique et économique, les retrouvailles entre la puissance hégémonique du système (les États-Unis), le pays leader du capitalisme libéral-démocratique, et de l’autre côté, la Chine communiste de Mao Zedong. En expliquant le contexte historique du rapprochement, les nuances politiques entourant les retrouvailles et, entre autres théories, la théorie du réalisme offensif de John Mearsheimer, l’auteur crée un kaléidoscope qui explique le rapprochement sino-américain après plus de vingt (20) ans de rupture diplomatique et de dissensions politiques sous différents angles (c’est pourquoi il s’agit d’une étude tripartite). Contrairement à ce que beaucoup pensent, le livre bat en brèche l’idée que l’ouverture de la Chine à la réintégration internationale a commencé pendant la période Deng Xiaoping, mais montre que l’inflexion internationale de la Chine a commencé avec Mao.
