Ils se réfugient dans des pratiques séculaires qui prédatent l’Islam et dans le Coran qu’ils ont mal lu pour justifier une attitude et aussi son contraire. Le même acte religieux et le même verset coranique peuvent faire l’objet d’interprétations contradictoires et servir à louer le changement ou le condamner. Une telle incohérence empêche l’émancipation de la société. L’opposition entre Islam et modernité occidentale profite à ceux à qui la tradition (pas nécessairement la religion) confère un statut privilegié. A l’hypocrisie de certains fidèles s’ajoutent la connaissance superficielle des préceptes religieux et la frilosité de savants musulmans qui suivent la lettre et violent l’esprit.
