Por los últimos 70 años ha estado velada por un tupido mito de fundación que ha echado hondas raíces en la historiografía de la región. Javier Rico Moreno afirma que 'la frontera que separa a la historiografía de la literatura de ficción es apenas la delgada pero indeleble línea que forman la referencialidad secundaria... y la pretensión de verdad que acompañan a la primera...'. Esto nos hace imperativo utilizar fuentes primarias en la medida que estén disponibles y complementarlas puntualmente con publicaciones sobre la región, para reconstruir su pasado basado en hechos constatables, no en posibilidades.
