Le monde moderne fait face à un nouveau phénomène appelé mondialisation ou globalisation . Il se caractérise, entre autres, par la compression du temps et de l’espace, conséquence de la révolution technologique qui a bouleversé les moyens de communication. C’est dans ce nouveau contexte que la question de l’identité qui a beaucoup préoccupé des écrivains, poètes et idéologues partisans de la conquête coloniale d’une part, et ceux de la Négritude et aujourd’hui de la Créolité d’autre part, se repose à nous d’une façon tout à fait différente. En effet, la relation de l’Un à l’Autre, la différence entre les hommes, a été pendant longtemps, et reste toujours une des questions cruciales de démarcation entre les tenants d’une identité à racine-unique et ceux d’une identité plurielle.
