Les francophones du Canada furent les premiers Euro-Américains à explorer et à s’installer durablement dans la majeure partie du territoire qui allait devenir le Pacifique nord-ouest. De ce fait, ils ont peu à peu disparu du récit national moderne du Canada. Parallèlement, ils ne furent jamais réintégrés dans l’historiographie des États-Unis, où on les considérait comme des intrus étrangers dans une histoire supposément américaine, vouée à s’effacer avec le déclin du commerce des fourrures et la fixation de la frontière internationale entre les deux pays.En réalité, ils avaient entre-temps tissé des liens familiaux avec une proportion importante des Premières Nations situées entre les Appalaches, telles que les Iroquois, Abénaquis, Delaware et Shawnee, et le Pacifique, y compris dans le tiers nord de la Californie, les Chinooks, les Salish de la côte et les Têtes-Plates. Aujourd’hui, une grande partie de leurs descendants s’identifie comme membres de ces nations autochtones, qu’ils se reconnaissent ou non également comme Métis.Selon les régions gagnées par l’expansion américaine, ce processus prit des formes variées. La question de l’Orégon offre un aperçu de la dernière phase de cette histoire : celle du Pacifique nord-ouest.Tout comme dans d’autres régions plus à l’est, la majorité des premiers colons sédentaires de la région du nord-ouest du Pacifique, vivant des deux côtés du 49e parallèle, se définissaient eux-mêmes comme  Canadiens . Ils pouvaient être employés par diverses compagnies ou diriger leurs propres entreprises, comme des compagnies de transport fluvial où ils étaient bateliers, par exemple. Ils agirent comme forgerons, commerçants, aux scieries, à l’exploration, en meunerie, comme trappeur, en agriculture et à l’élevage, et finalement, au sein d’entreprises indépendantes, ils participaient à la chasse et à la traite des fourrures. À cette époque, tous les Canadiens parlaient français et étaient de confession catholique. Même les Écossais, leurs patrons protestants, devaient parler français pour se faire comprendre.Ce livre offre aux intéressés une page peu connue de l’histoire du Canada et des États-Unis, celle où le français était la seule langue de travail de la région et était aussi parlé à la maison avec les langues autochtones locales et le jargon commercial : le Chinook.
