La prédation scientifique est le phénomène qui consiste à obtenir une réputation scientifique en exploitant les autres, en faisant du trafic d’influence et en abusant de sa position. L’ouvrage présente des études de cas de prédation scientifique de personnes anonymes et célèbres, actuelles et historiques, du monde de la science. Le comportement prédateur dans le domaine scientifique entraîne une croissance artificielle du facteur d’impact de la revue et de l’indice d’influence de Hirsch, sur la base desquels le chercheur acquiert une réputation non méritée dans le domaine scientifique, ce qui conduit à une compétition inégale pour l’obtention de projets et de prix, de sorte que les chercheurs de haut rang obtiennent des avantages personnels aux dépens de l’exploitation intellectuelle de leurs subalternes. Certaines victimes de la prédation se voient attribuer des coauteurs fantômes, tandis que d’autres restent invisibles et inaperçues dans le monde scientifique. La prédation dans le domaine scientifique ainsi que le harcèlement moral peuvent conduire au suicide des victimes de la prédation. Il est nécessaire de changer les règles relatives aux études doctorales, de modifier les méthodes de calcul du facteur d’impact des revues et de l’indice de Hirsch des chercheurs, le mode d’attribution des projets et du prix Nobel, ainsi que la normalisation mondiale de l’édition scientifique et de l’évaluation des universités.
