Le narrateur, Jérôme, chérit tendrement dès l’enfance sa cousine Alissa, bonne, vertueuse et d’une grande ferveur religieuse. Tous voient leur union d’un oeil favorable mais Alissa diffère le moment des fiançailles. Une telle attitude s’explique tout d’abord par le fait qu’Alissa a découvert que sa jeune soeur, Juliette, était amoureuse de Jérôme. Toutefois, même après le mariage, visiblement heureux, de Juliette avec un négociant, Alissa continue à éloigner d’elle Jérôme...Tout comme l’Immoraliste, le roman précédent de Gide, la Porte étroite se nourrit d’éléments autobiographiques. Mais si l’oeuvre fictive s’inspire de la réalité vécue, elle ne cherche toutefois nullement à la reproduire. Ainsi, Gide se défend d’avoir peint, à travers Alissa, l’héroïne de la Porte étroite, sa cousine Madeleine, devenue son épouse. Alissa refuse le bonheur terrestre, auquel elle préfère l’expérience mystique. Mais c’est aussi la crainte que la réalité ne soit pas à la hauteur de l’idéal rêvé qui fait reculer la jeune fille. Plus obscurément encore, la peur de l’union charnelle, qui semble hanter secrètement Jérôme et qu’Alissa devine sans doute, sépare les amants.
