La piedra lunar de Wilkie Collins, publicada el año 1868 en Inglaterra se considera generalmente como la primera novela policial o detectivesca de Inglaterra. Inicialmente fue publicada en la revista literaria semanal All the Year Round, fundada y dirigida por Charles Dickens en 1859. Collins adaptó asimismo esta novela como pieza teatral en 1877. En el curso del siglo XX fue objeto de tres adaptaciones para el cine y televisión. La novela cuenta que la Piedra Lunar, una valiosa joya, es robada de un santuario hindú. De esta piedra se cuentan toda clase de leyendas maléficas. Raquel Verinder, heredera de un lord inglés, recibe la piedra como regalo de cumpleaños, pero después de la cena de celebración con varios invitados la joya desaparece. El sargento Cuff es el encargado de la investigación y deberá descubrir la verdad a través de las diferentes versiones de los hechos que ofrece cada uno de los personajes implicados. La piedra lunar es una novela absorbente y apasionante, que atrapa al lector desde la primera hasta la última página. En palabras de T.S. Eliot, se trata de la más perfecta novela policíaca escrita hasta la fecha y un melodrama apasionante que ilumina los recovecos más íntimos de la naturaleza humana.
