Je ne me suis pas proposé dans cet ouvrage, qui devait être bref, de publier une nouvelle histoire sommaire de la littérature du XVIIIe siècle. Cette histoire existe dans les histoires générales de la littérature française ; je l’ai moi-même écrite ; et je n’avais pas la prétention, en si peu de pages, de la renouveler. Par contre on n’a pas donné d’histoire méthodique et suivie de la pensée française. Les tableaux qu’on en a tracés restent nécessairement confus parce qu’il s’y mêle l’histoire de l’art, du goût, des tempéraments, parce que l’étude des génies originaux fait perdre un peu de vue celle des courants généraux de la pensée, des mouvements d’opinion ; ou bien ces tableaux sont incomplets et partiaux ; du moins je crois qu’ils le sont. J’ai donc tenté d’écrire l’histoire non plus de quelques grands hommes ou de  genres littéraires , mais de la vie intellectuelle et morale de la nation, de 1700 environ à 1789. - D. MornetDavid Mornet fut professeur d’histoire de la littérature française à La Sorbonne. Dans cet ouvrage didactique destiné à ses étudiants, il montre avec talent que l’histoire de la pensée française au XVIIIe siècle est une histoire complexe qu’on a eu trop souvent le grand tort de simplifier. Elle est, écrit-il, complexe jusque dans les âmes mêmes .
