La Nouvelle Héloïse, or Letters of Two Lovers, Inhabitants of a Small Town at the Foot of the Alps, is an epistolary novel by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, published in 1761. This is Volume 3 of the collected letters. Told through the exchange of letters, the novel explores themes of love, virtue, and social class, and was one of the best-selling novels of the eighteenth century. It had a profound influence on the development of the Romantic movement. The story revolves around the passionate love between Julie and her tutor Saint-Preux and the moral and social constraints that ultimately lead to their separation. Rousseau’s exploration of human emotions and his critique of societal norms make 'La Nouvelle Héloïse' a significant work in the history of literature. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
