Este libro continúa la versión anterior (que terminaba en 1930) y añade nuevos trabajos sobre la nobleza de los reinados de Amadeo de Saboya y Alfonso XX, la economía nobiliaria, la nobleza catalana y madrileña, la biografía de Jacobo Fitz-james Stuart, duque de alba (1878-1953) así como la actualización bibliográfica de la relación final.Durante el siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX, conviven las familias aristocráticas antiguas con las nuevas. En su artículo «Ataque feroz a la aristocracia arribista», Fernández de Bethencourt (1908) hacía un repaso de lo que describía como el barullo nobiliario que habían generado los reyes del siglo XIX con su política tan pródiga en la concesión de títulos. Se trataba del ennoblecimiento de las clases sencillamente enriquecidas. Eran los conocidos con calificativos como el «ilustre prócer, el noble magnate, el conocido aristócrata, la linajuda dama que el vulgo acepta como suele». El proceso duró más de un siglo y se había iniciado en el XVIII. Los trabajos de nueve historiadores y el estudio bibliográfico final analizan diversos momentos y circunstancias de la evolución de la nobleza como grupo social, cuyo conocimiento es necesario para entender la sociedad española. 10
