Hay muchos relatos de mujeres en la Biblia Católica, tanto en el Antiguo Testamento como en el Nuevo Testamento. La mayoría de ellas silenciadas o ensombrecidas en pasajes donde la figura de los varones acapara el enfoque del texto. En la presente novela se extrae la figura de una mujer que solo aparece en el evangelio de Lucas: “La mujer encorvada” (Lc 13, 10-17). Su protagonismo evangélico se reduce al encuentro sanador que dicha mujer tiene con Jesús de Nazaret en una sinagoga. Lo más importante del citado texto es el atrevimiento de Jesús que cura en sábado pero la autora, a través de Ashna, la mujer encorvada, hace un análisis de la sociedad de Palestina en el siglo I en sus aspectos sociales, políticos y religiosos. Su encorvamiento lo atribuye en la novela a las numerosas situaciones de desprecio a la que se ve sometida la protagonista por ser mujer. Contrae matrimonio con Cleophás, un seguidor de Jesús. Ambos serán los discípulos de Emaús. Con el tiempo, emigran a Iconio, ciudad de Anatolia, localizada entre los Montes Tauro y los Montes del Sultán, buscando tierras buenas para la agricultura. Allí se establecen con su hijo Moshé de cuya unión con Teoclía nacerá Tecla. La abuela de Tecla, Ashna, no aprobará la admiración que su nieta profesa por Pablo de Tarso. 10
