Le jeune Dr Abercromby, terminant ses études de médecine à Aberdeen et Paris, a décidé de passer quelques temps à Berlin pour comparer la thérapeutique allemande des maladies nerveuses avec celle de Paris. Au début des années 30, les Britanniques ne sont toutefois pas les bienvenus en Allemagne. Dans une brasserie Abercromby est moqué par les autres consommateurs mais ne s’en fait pas. Ce soir-là il se passe toutefois quelque chose d’insolite. Dans la salle du fond les conversations s’arrêtent net à son arrivée, un homme qui vient de rentrer le regarde intensément.
