Este ambicioso libro trata de recomponer la pluralidad de figuras del intelectual a partir de la que apareció en Francia a raíz del affaire Dreyfus. Entre la historia clásica de las ideas, la historia de la filosofía, la historia de las mentalidades y la historia cultural, FrançoisDosse, siguiendo el camino de trabajos anteriores, explora la historia intelectual como espacio de investigación. Se trata de analizar en conjunto a los autores y sus obras en el contexto en que han nacido, rechazando la empobrecedora disyuntiva entre una lectura internalista de los textos y una aproximación externalista que privilegia exclusivamente las redes de sociabilidad. Teniendo en cuenta la renovación de la historia intelectual, se interroga la evolución de las ideas en un ir y venir constante entre el pasado y las preguntas que formulamos al pasado en función de nuestro presente.
