Dans la tradition philosophique, la question de la liberté a été l’un des thèmes les plus érigés et les plus discutés, c’est indéniable. Jusqu’à la théorie hégélienne de la liberté, la conception de la liberté a été, depuis son archétype classique, liée à une morale politique - comme nous le voyons dans le monde grec antique - jusqu’à une compréhension de la liberté fondée sur un élément subjectif, comme l’ont proposé les modernes. Au sommet de l’idéalisme allemand, Hegel (1770 - 1831) a proposé l’une des théories de la liberté les plus marquantes, et même l’une des plus originales, puisqu’elle vise à réunir grosso modo les deux conceptions indiquées ci-dessus. Une liberté qui appréhende non seulement une liberté subjective - comme le proposent ses prédécesseurs de la modernité - mais aussi une liberté liée à la morale politique - comme chez les Grecs anciens.
