Le Barbouillé est marié avec Angélique. Mais il n’est pas satisfait de sa femme qui, dit-il, le fait enrager. Il demande au docteur son avis sur la façon de la punir.À la scène suivante, on voit apparaître Angélique, qui se plaint également de son mari à son amant Valère. Le Barbouillé revient et se plaint de la présence de Valère. Gorgibus, le père d’Angélique, ne peut dissiper la dispute. Le docteur qui veut s’en mêler est traîné hors de scène par Le Barbouillé.Angélique se décide à aller à un bal, où elle espère retrouver Valère. Au retour, elle trouve porte close, et son mari à la fenêtre, qui refuse de la laisser entrer. Elle fait semblant de se donner la mort avec son couteau, et Le Barbouillé, incrédule, descend voir ce qu’il en est. Angélique en profite pour entrer dans la maison et fermer la porte derrière elle. La situation est alors inversée : c’est Le Barbouillé qui est maintenant dehors. Angélique se plaint à son père qui est revenu, que son mari ne rentre qu’à cette heure, ivre. Le Barbouillé, ne pouvant se justifier, enrage.
