La Ilíada es un poema de género épico que narra la cólera de Aquiles durante cincuenta y un días en el décimo y último año de la guerra de Troya, un conflicto que, según la mitología, enfrentó al ejército aqueo contra esta ciudad después de que Helena hubiera sido raptada por Paris de Troya. La furia de Aquiles se explica porque Agamenón, el rey de los reyes, le habría robado a Briseida, una doncella que el héroe había recibido como botín de guerra. Junto con La Odisea, estas dos obras fueron las composiciones más importantes en la literatura para los griegos de la época clásica y se utilizaron como pilares fundamentales de la pedagogía. Los dos poemas épicos forman parte de una serie más amplia de diferentes autores conocida habitualmente como ciclo troyano, aunque de las otras composiciones únicamente han sobrevivido fragmentos.
