Bernardo de Gálvez, gobernador español de Luisiana, contribuyó a la Revolución americana luchando como soldado español. Expulsó a los británicos de Pensacola (Florida), protegió la desembocadura del río Mississippi y gran parte de la costa del Golfo, convirtiéndose en un símbolo de fortaleza para estas colonias. Sin embargo, el papel español para asegurar el éxito de la Revolución estadounidense se menciona pobremente en la mayoría de las clases de Historia de los Estados Unidos aunque este haya sido un factor fundamental en esa ardua lucha.
