Les œuvres des années 60-70 du XIXe siècle ont une orientation 'agitatrice' et propagandiste prononcée. La guerre de Sécession, l’écrasante défaite et la période de reconstruction ont laissé des traces dans l’image que les Sudistes avaient d’eux-mêmes. Même après le retrait des armées nordistes, ils ont été contraints d’accepter le rôle dégradant de perdants, de citoyens de seconde zone dans leur propre patrie, et nombre d’entre eux se considéraient comme tels. Les Sudistes ont été accusés de racisme, d’intolérance religieuse, de dégradation spirituelle et intellectuelle, ce qui n’a fait qu’accroître leur sentiment d’impuissance et de désespoir, surtout dans les premières années qui ont suivi la guerre de Sécession. En conséquence, l’interprétation des questions militaires était extrêmement subjective et reflétait le point de vue officiel du Sud, le commentaire de l’auteur sur les événements de ces années-là. Cela a conduit à une transformation significative des faits et des personnages historiques, les subordonnant à l’installation idéologique du Sud.
