La gitanilla es la primera y la más popular de las Novelas ejemplares de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Se ignora la fecha de su composi­ción. En ella Cervantes mezcla los tópicos sobre los gitanos en un juego de identidades. El relato empieza del modo que sigue:Parece que los gitanos y gitanas solamente nacieron en el mundo para ser ladrones. Nacen de padres ladrones, críanse con ladrones, estudian para ladrones y, finalmente, salen con ser ladrones corrientes y molientes, a todo ruedo. Y la gana del hurtar, y el hurtar, son en ellos como accidentes inseparables, que no se quitan sino con la muerte.Miguel de Cervantes compone un relato itinerante, con rasgos de la picaresca y lleno de acción. Preciosa es una muchacha de origen noble raptada por unos gitanos y educada por ellos, y un noble que se enamora de ella y decide llevar vida gitana. Preciosa es una criatura bella, inteligente y llena de vitalidad. Poco a poco la trama revela que la gitanilla, Preciosa, es un personaje complejo y que las acusaciones a los gitanos antes citadas son injustas.Así se despliega una espiral de enredos y confusiones ordenadas en una trama cerrada y mordaz. La gitanilla es también un retrato de las diferencias étnicas de la época cervantina.
