La Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Delivered) is an epic poem by Torquato Tasso, first published in 1581. It tells a largely fictionalized version of the First Crusade in which Christian knights, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, battle Muslims to conquer Jerusalem. Tasso began work on the poem in the mid-1560s. Originally, it bore the title Il Goffredo. The poem is composed of twenty sections, or cantos, each made up of ottava rima stanzas of hendecasyllabic verse. It is considered one of the most important works of the Italian Renaissance.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
