Un grand nombre d’ouvrages associent l’instabilité politique du Moyen-Orient à l’engagement politique et militaire actif des États-Unis dans le golfe Persique. Aux yeux des États-Unis, les énormes réserves de pétrole disponibles dans la région sont considérées comme des éléments stratégiques pour les intérêts politiques et économiques du pays. Stimulé par ce scénario, cet article se propose d’analyser la relation entre le pétrole, la politique étrangère des États-Unis et la configuration géopolitique du golfe Persique, de 1945 à nos jours, en cherchant à identifier comment l’influence du pétrole sur la politique étrangère des États-Unis a affecté la configuration géopolitique du golfe Persique. La méthode utilisée pour atteindre cet objectif consiste à étudier les relations entre les États-Unis et les trois principaux producteurs de pétrole du golfe Persique : l’Arabie saoudite, l’Iran et l’Irak. En mettant l’accent sur le récit historique, l’étude se concentre sur les moments clés où la politique étrangère américaine a influencé la configuration géopolitique du Moyen-Orient.
