Como Nuncio Apostólico de la Santa Sede, monseñor Federico Lunardi, vivió en varios países. Uno de ellos fue Honduras, donde descubrió y se enamoró de la cultura maya. En el transcurso de una década, realizó varias investigaciones en las Ruinas de Copán que más tarde publicaría en libros. También escribió sobre el Cacique Lempira y la fundación de las principales ciudades de lo que después sería territorio hondureño. 'La fundación de Gracias a Dios es un tema que me impresionó desde que escribí mi obra anterior titulada Lempira', señala el autor en su prólogo. ¿Qué papel jugaron temidos personajes como Pedro de Alvarado, Cristóbal de Olid o Gil González Dávila? Esta obra, enriquecida con infinidad de referencias antiguas, es una joya para las personas a las que les gusta la Historia. El título original del libro (La fundación de la Ciudad de Gracias a Dios y de las primeras villas y ciudades de Honduras), ha sido modificado para hacerlo un poco más atractivo a los actuales lectores.
