Questo articolo si propone di fornire una panoramica concettuale della teorizzazione di Sigmund Freud e Jacques Lacan sulla questione della fine dell’analisi. Partendo dalle impasse freudiane del testo Analisi terminabile e interminabile (1937), si può notare come l’opera di Lacan abbia compiuto notevoli progressi teorici e tecnici, formalizzando una teoria specifica della fine dell’analisi in cui l’etica della psicoanalisi sostiene un esito logico per il soggetto e la causa della sua scissione. Non potendo più tornare indietro di fronte alle conseguenze di ciò che dice e alla conseguente perdita dei suoi riferimenti fondamentali nella fantasia, il soggetto deve sostenere il suo desiderio senza garanzie. Se tutto ciò che viene detto parte dall’impossibilità strutturale del rapporto sessuale, la sofferenza nevrotica può utilizzare il fatto della struttura per affrontare l’angoscia in un altro modo. La metamorfosi del soggetto consiste quindi nel saper affrontare la natura della parvenza e l’irriducibilità del suo sintomo nel silenzio della lettera che rubrica il suo godimento.
