Hacia el siglo IV, las pautas europeas de matrimonio y de parentesco experimentaron una transformación radical. La Europa cristiana rompió con su propio pasado y estableció unas prácticas que se separaron claramente de las vigentes en el Próximo Oriente, el norte de África y Asia. En esta obra, Jack Goody defiende que desde el siglo IV se desarrolló en el norte del Mediterráneo un sistema de parentesco peculiar, cuya implantación puede atribuirse a la acumulación por parte de la Iglesia de propiedades, ya que reguló unas normas de matrimonio que permitían canalizar la riqueza desde el medio familiar hacia la institución eclesiástica. Al mismo tiempo, la estructura de la vida doméstica se vio totalmente alterada al insistir la Iglesia en la voluntad del individuo, en la pareja conyugal y en el parentesco artificial por encima de los tradicionales lazos naturales.
