En La economía política y el cristianismo Zeferino González analiza el pensamiento económico desde una perspectiva religiosa: «Smith es como el jefe de esa escuela semi-materialista de Economía política, que solo ve en el hombre un capital y un productor de riquezas; escuela cuyos principios desecantes, y cuyas doctrinas egoístas tienden a hacer más desgraciada la suerte de los pobres, en vez de aliviar su infortunio; escuela, en fin, para la cual casi nada significan y en la cual para nada entran la religión y la moral.» Y en opinión de Zeferino, esta corriente de pensamiento soslaya una visión más amplia del hombre: «Smith no halla ni busca nada para impedir la degradación moral del hombre, no parece preocuparle en lo más mínimo la suerte de esa clase infortunada de obreros que caminan rápidamente al embrutecimiento y la inmoralidad, sepultados en las fábricas y talleres; en una palabra, en la teoría de Smith el hombre moral y religioso no significa nada, y desaparece por completo ante el hombre material, ante el hombre máquina, ante el hombre productor de la riqueza.»
