En effet, pratiqué dans la tradition africaine et notamment dans la partie ouest du continent, le cousinage à plaisanterie est un pacte qui lie des communautés différentes. Celles-ci peuvent avoir des statuts professionnels, communauté des bouchers et des nomades-éleveurs, ou des communautés peulh et sérère. Ces relations humaines portent exclusivement sur une relation de plaisanterie et d’assistance matérielle ou de tout ordre entre les communautés dites cousines. Elle introduit en quelque sorte un instant comique dans le quotidien des cousins plaisants. Et comme l’explique Umberto Eco, le comique présuppose fondamentalement une part d’implicite fondée sur l’existence d’une communauté. Cet ouvrage met en relief une forme de sociabilité séculaire en Afrique, et explore les voies d’un vivre ensemble, dans une Afrique contemporaine où se délitent comme jamais par le passé les rapports sociaux.
