Cet ouvrage critique la démocratie en soulignant ses contradictions et ses limites. Il met en évidence que, malgré ses valeurs d’égalité, de liberté et de participation, la démocratie favorise souvent la manipulation, la superficialité et la démagogie, où la persuasion et la popularité priment sur la recherche de la vérité, de la compétence et de la sagesse. La majorité, parfois influencée par des discours séduisants ou des stratégies de manipulation, peut privilégier l’éloquence et l’émotion plutôt que la connaissance. Cela soulève des questions sur la légitimité des décisions collectives, souvent prises par des opinions ignorantes ou influençables, plutôt que par des choix éclairés. Le texte propose une analyse critique des mécanismes démocratiques, en cherchant à dévoiler les pièges et illusions, tout en réfléchissant à des pistes pour une gouvernance plus sincère, équilibrée et fondée sur la vérité et la compétence. Il insiste sur la nécessité d’un renouvellement démocratique, plus transparent et éthique, pour éviter que la démocratie ne devienne une simple mascarade de persuasion, et pour que le pouvoir repose véritablement sur la sagesse collective.
